FAQS
Q. What training methods do you use?
A. I use whatever works for that dog. In the showing phase, I like to use a lot of positive training, with either food or toy as a reward.
Q. Do you use corrections and how?
A. Yes. I give the dog opportunity to make the right decision. If the dog does, it is reward. If the dog doesn't, there is a consequence. I train according to the dog's temperament and the correct may be as mild as a firm "No" or "Ah". If that doesn't get the dog's attention, I will use a collar correction. I only use enough correction to get the desired response. I always use more praise than corrections. The correction phase only comes after the dog understands the commands.
Q. What types of training equipment do you use?
A. Once again, it depends on the dog. In the showing and getting to know phase, I like to use a nylon slip collar, with a leather leash. If that isn't working, or the owner needs something a little stronger, I will switch to a metal pinch/prong collar.
I also use clickers. I am not a fan of head halters, because the dog is only under control when it is wearing one. I use a lot of treats and toys for motivation.
Q. Pinch collars look cruel. Why do you not use a Choke Col
lar?
A. Choke chains are a good tool, however, it can be hard for some owners to give a "pop" hard enough to work. Plus, there was a study done on 100 labs, and the choke collar proved to have last effects on the dog's tracheas. For info on that study
, go here.  Pinch collars were designed to simulate another dog's bite, and it provides pressure all the way around the neck. The Choke collar only provides pressure around the trachea.
Q. Is your training guaranteed?

A. My methods are guaranteed to work, but the real training comes from the time you are willing to put into. I show you how to set your dog up for success, you do the rest. I am available anytime you are having problems or concerns.

Q. Should my kids be involved in the training?

A. Yes, all family members should be involved in the training. Dogs learn best through consistency and when everyone trains the same way, the learning will go so much quicker.

Q. Why do you recommend a dog stay 4 weeks for the Board & Train?

A. I train with the dog's temperament and what your goals are for that dog.  A shy dog may take longer than an outgoing, confident one. The first week is spent bonding and getting to know the dog, with only a few lessons.  If you take your dog through an obedience class, you learn how to teach your dog a couple new behaviors every week. Throughout the week, you work on those behaviors at home. It is the same way with the Board & Train. Each week, I teach your dog new behaviors and work on them throughout the week. Board & Train is great for busy owners that do not have the time to train daily.
Q. Do you use a remote collar?
A. I do not use remote collars. But I am not apposed to using them. A remote collar should only be used by someone that knows how to use it correctly. I have seen many dogs messed up by improper use. To teach the remote collar for obedience control, the dog MUST know the commands first.  Then, the collar should be paired with a leash to show the dog how to shut off the stimulation. Only use enough stimulation to get the dog's attention. When a dog vocalizes, it's too much. A remote collar can also be used to end an unwanted behavior, but use caution on what behavior you are hoping to end. If you want to use a remote collar for your dog, please call me first. I can show you how to condition your dog for it and how to properly use it.
